Rory Gilmore Reading List
They say that anxious people tend to watch movies or series repeatedly in high stress or anxiety riddled situations. Why? BECAUSE WE KNOW WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN!
My go to shows are Gilmore Girls and New Girl. Relatable, emotional and very familiar.
Today's generation will never truly grasp the combination of frustration and excited anticipation for a new episode of your favorite show to come out ONCE a week. Growing up, I religiously timed and watched Gilmore Girls, One Tree Hill and Charmed. A special time dedicated to sitting next to my mom and being glued to the tv set in our living room, occasionally racing to the bathroom in the 2 minute window worth of commercials.
Charmed faded out with the death of a beloved main character (the show came out in 1998 - if you think this is a spoiler because you haven't watch it yet in the past 24 years, well.....sorry... you might have missed your window.) One Tree Hill ended and I didn't fully relate to it since I was in adolescence when I was watching it. But, Gilmore Girls was relatable! Rory Gilmore's experiences and lifestyle mirrored mine while her mother's, Lorlei Gilmore, resembled my mother's. Rory was a young girl, smart, entirely too entrenched in the worlds that unfolded in front of her on the book pages of hundreds of books. She was raised by a single mother who had a strained but present relationship with her parents. So as time went by and my life unfolded with boys and books and grandparents and life, I related to her. So when life has me extra anxious or I am in a phase of uncertainty and lots of change, i rewatch Gilmore Girls. Each big new chapter of my life is officiated by watching this show and laughing, crying and cringing at the same show from a different perspective each time.
In the series, Rory and her mother referenced many a book, band and movie. Many people have made lists of the books that were referenced throughout the show and I have been trying to tackle this list for years. I will admit that I decided to not read the text books or travel guides but I am making my way down the list slowly but surely.
The list is below...a compilation by Buzzfeed. The titles that have read. are in purple (since Wix won't show my strike through line). The green titles are books that I have in my collection at home or on my Kindle. The red titles are the ones that i decided to eliminate, as I mentioned above.

Funny enough, this list was one of the bonding factors that made me consider dating my boyfriend( in a similar manner that Rory considered Jess). I have shown this list to many people, including avid readers, and none of them showed much interest. When Micah and I were in our friend-zoned phase, I sent him this list, expecting to get a similar reaction. To my surprise, he went through and read every title and put together a list of the books he had read from the list and the order in which I should read his recommendations. I was shocked and delighted and it probably was a subconscious turning point for my feelings. (I still denied it for awhile, to myself of course, but I started to consider him as more than just a cute face.) He reads!
When I was a kid, prior to going to school, my mom used to read to me all the time. She convinced me that vegetables were dessert and that tv shows didn't exist because we just watched VHS tapes. Then I went to school and that illusion ended and I boycotted reading (and vegetables) for awhile. I REGRET those years that lacked reading. Thankfully I had school to keep my mind sharp. In my teens I started getting back into reading. Harry Potter ended my boycot and threw me back down the rabbit hole of my imagination. Since then, I have read countless books and began my collection of books that I probably will never be able to read because I collect them faster than I can read them. I may or may not have a problem. In my busy schedule I make an effort now to fill my time with things that make me happy, so in my free time I paint (by numbers), read and attempt to write. Feel free to drop any recommendations in the comments. My mind is always searching for a good read!
Enjoy the list and if you haven't watched Gilmore Girls, I highly recommend it!
